Bosnian Community in Elmwood Park Celebrates Bayram, Mekteb Year, and Remembrance Day
A large Bosnian community gathering took place in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. People came from New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. The event celebrated Eid al-Adha and Hadj Bayram. It also marked the end of a successful Mekteb year. The community honored International White Ribbons Day as well.
The program featured a special academy and a diploma ceremony for Mekteb students. Berina Mehović hosted the event. Amna Nikočević recited from the Quran. Alena Avdić and Arijela Radončić provided translations. Fadil Feratović, the džemmat president, welcomed everyone. He praised the children's achievements in Mekteb. He thanked parents, Hafiz Hako ef. Omeragić, and volunteers for their efforts.
The džemmat choir, "Mladi Ljiljani," sang several hymns. Minela Avdić, a coordinator and volunteer, spoke about Mekteb's importance. She thanked Hafiz Omeragić and all volunteers. Imam Hafiz Hako ef. Omeragić gave the main speech. He described Mekteb as the heart of the community. He said it builds friendships and love for Islam. He highlighted that children are the community's greatest hope. He thanked many women for their contributions. These included Minela Avdić, Mirnesa Nikočević, Berina Mehović, Elvina Ličina, Šemsija Dervišević, Alida Hamidović, Lahira Adilović, and Enisa Javorovac. He also acknowledged džemmat committee members such as Fadil Feratović, Šeki Javorovac, Emir Nokić, and Dr. Aras Konjuhodžić.
Hafiz Omeragić also remembered May 31st. This is the International White Ribbons Day for Prijedor. He stressed the need to preserve Bosnian identity, culture of remembrance, and historical truth. He said new generations must know their history. This helps them build a strong future and keep their faith and heritage alive.
After the speeches, Mekteb students received diplomas and gifts. The celebration continued with a shared dinner and activities for children. The community expressed gratitude to web magazine Bošnjaci.net and photographer Ammar Krcić. The evening concluded with a festive Bayram dinner and refreshments.
