Brčko District Status Under Threat from Republika Srpska Influence
IllustrationIndependent intellectuals from "Krug 99" have warned about a serious threat to Brčko District's status in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They say this could harm the entire country. At a session on the Final Arbitral Decision for Brčko, it was stressed that Brčko's future is a strategic issue, not just local. Enes Pašalić of the Association of Brčko Intellectuals presented a proclamation. This document points to years of political and legal actions. These actions are strengthening entity influence in the District. Pašalić stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina's presence in Brčko has barely been felt for two decades. Meanwhile, Republika Srpska (RS) and Milorad Dodik have established their presence, showing RS is asserting sovereignty in Brčko.
Pašalić said Brčko's status directly affects Bosnia and Herzegovina's political future. He added that Brčko's status affects RS's continuity, seen as a step towards state confederation and possible secession. He warned that this key state issue is often ignored in Sarajevo. He noted decisions have returned powers to entities that should be for Brčko District. The purchase of the "Srpska kuća" (Serb House) is an example. RS authorities in Banja Luka bought this building for RS institutions, creating an RS space within the District.
Pašalić concluded that stopping these trends needs more than just local action. He proposed forming a joint working body of experts from Sarajevo and Brčko. This body would analyze political processes in the District and offer concrete solutions, as local capacity is insufficient.
