Convicted War Criminal Ratko Mladić Dies in The Hague

War criminal Ratko Mladić has died in The Hague. Many called him Europe's worst criminal since the Nazis. The International Court in The Hague sentenced Mladić to life in prison on June 8, 2021. This was for genocide and crimes against humanity from 1992 to 1995.

Mladić was guilty of the Srebrenica genocide, killing over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys. He also caused terror in Sarajevo during the war. His forces attacked civilians. As commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, he led the 1,460-day siege of Sarajevo. Over 11,500 people died, including 1,601 children.

Mladić was indicted on July 24, 1995. He hid for nearly 16 years, with help from Serbian authorities. He appeared in court in July 2011. His four-year trial used many witnesses and evidence.
