UN Official Condemns Glorification of War Criminals in the Balkans
United Nations Under-Secretary-General Chaloka Beyani responded to letters from Bosnian victims' associations. The correspondence came from Munira Subašić and Murat Tahirović. They raised concerns about public funeral honors for convicted war criminals Ratko Mladić and Biljana Plavšić in Serbia and the Serb entity of Bosnia.
Beyani stated that his office monitors these events with deep concern. He warned that glorifying criminals spreads genocide denial. He emphasized that facts established by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia do not vanish upon a convict's death. Beyani also announced plans to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina and Srebrenica in 2027. He intends to honor victims and oppose divisive rhetoric.
