Bosnia and Herzegovina Honors Police and Veterans for Their Service

A formal event was held in Skenderija, attended by about 1500 police officers and veterans. Police forces and cadets from the FMUP Police Academy stood in formation. The ceremony began with the national anthem and a moment of silence for those who died serving Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Denis Bećirović, Chairman of the BiH Presidency, said the event demonstrated the strength of BiH and its police. He stated it showed people united in their duty, ready to serve the country. Mr. Bećirović added that those who defended BiH will be remembered.

Vahid Alagić, President of a police veterans' union, recalled the September 19, 1991 decision to prepare police for combat. He noted that police were the only organized force fighting aggression until mid-1992, and continued their work. Mr. Alagić stated these police structures were essential for forming the BiH Armed Forces. He requested police veterans be part of veteran associations in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Chief Inspector Dejan Barić of the Sarajevo Canton Police spoke about veterans defending law and order. He said today's police role is vital, with an oath to protect lives and BiH's constitutional order. Cadet Belma Bećirović thanked veterans for their strong foundation, adding new cadets are ready to continue their work.

The event included musical performances. September 19, 1991, is a key date. On this day, the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina ordered the mobilization of police reserves. This provided BiH with an organized force to protect citizens and the country when aggression began.
