Bosnia's Islamic Community Confirms Reisul-ulema Candidates for October Election

The Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina (IZ BiH) Council confirmed three candidates for its 14th Reisul-ulema. This happened during a session in Sarajevo on September 5, 2026. The candidates are Dr. Salem-ef. Dedović, Mufti of Mostar; Prof. Dr. Nedžad-ef. Grabus, Mufti of Sarajevo; and Hafiz Prof. Dr. Mensur-ef. Malkić, Director of Religious Affairs. The election will take place on October 10.

Current Reisul-ulema Husein-ef. Kavazović addressed the Council. He emphasized that a free and dignified election shows the community's maturity. Kavazović stated the Reisul-ulema's role is a sacred obligation, not a privilege. He urged members to avoid political-style campaigns and polarization. He warned against negative media campaigns and divisions based on region, stressing that all parts of the community are equally important. He highlighted the mission to pass on faith to new generations and care for believers.

Dr. Salem-ef. Dedović presented his vision. He described the Reisul-ulema as the community's first servant and responsible leader. He promised to listen, gather competent people, and take full responsibility. Dedović aims for a strong, free, and caring community that directly addresses problems. He wants to protect Islamic tradition and ensure unity.

Prof. Dr. Nedžad-ef. Grabus stressed the community's autonomy. He said decisions must come from within, free from outside pressures. Grabus acknowledged challenges like Islamophobia and right-wing movements. He emphasized supporting Bosniak Muslim culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sandžak. He also highlighted the need to preserve identity for Bosniaks living abroad, especially for children who may not speak Bosnian. He promised to work diligently for an inclusive community.

Hafiz Prof. Dr. Mensur-ef. Malkić viewed his candidacy as a significant responsibility. His program focuses on continuing good practices, making improvements, and finding new solutions for modern challenges. He called for more enthusiasm, responsibility, inclusiveness, and trust within the community. Malkić reminded everyone that the Islamic Community is more important than any individual. He urged a dignified election process to strengthen the institution.

Edhem Bičakčić, President of the IZ BiH Council, praised the candidates' creative and concrete ideas. He believes the election will help the Islamic Community continue to grow. The new Reisul-ulema will be chosen by secret ballot by an electoral body on October 10.
