Sarajevo Commemorates 33 Years Since Dobrinja Water Queue Massacre
Thirty-three years have passed since a tragic event in Sarajevo. On July 12, 1993, 14 citizens were killed while waiting for water on Hakije Turajlića street in Dobrinja. A shell fired from aggressor positions also wounded 16 people.
A delegation from Canton Sarajevo, joined by families of the victims, the Union of Civilian War Victims, and the City of Sarajevo, laid flowers and honored those who died. The names of the 14 victims were read: Ilham Jelovac, Ajdin Kirlić, Vinka Knehtl, Ljiljana Matić, Nedžiba Mehonić, Rahima Mehonić, Sedajeta Mehonić, Dragica Mićanović, Sulejman Selimović, Zorka Simić, Enisa Talić, Ibrahim Talić, Jaminka Tvrtković, and Stela Tvrtković.
Dušanka Bošković, Minister for Science, Higher Education and Youth of Canton Sarajevo, spoke at the event. She stressed the importance of remembering these events. This remembrance honors the victims and teaches future generations. It serves as a warning against such crimes happening again.
Minister Bošković reminded everyone of the great destruction and loss of life in Sarajevo during the siege. Over 12,000 citizens, including 1,601 children, were killed. She said these are not just numbers; each represents a life and immense family pain. Preserving the truth and teaching peace, co-existence, and human dignity are essential. Bosnia and Herzegovina must build its future on justice, responsibility, and mutual respect for lasting peace.
