Sarajevo's Festival of Defiance: Izetbegović's Enduring Message

The "Guardians of Bosnia" association recently shared a previously unheard speech by Alija Izetbegović, the first president of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this speech, he spoke about the inaugural Sarajevo Film Festival, held in 1995 during the city's siege. Despite daily shelling and severe conditions, the festival ran for 12 days. It was a powerful act by citizens and organizers to show that life and culture would persist, rejecting fear.

Izetbegović's words from that period still resonate strongly. His declaration, "To conquer us, they must kill all of us!" became a defining message of Sarajevo's resistance. It signaled that even with constant bombardment and deprivation, the city's spirit could not be broken. The first SFF was more than a film event; it was a clear act of defiance. It safeguarded the human right to life, culture, and hope amidst unimaginable hardship.

This festival holds a unique place in Sarajevo's history, born from the impossibility of organizing such an event during wartime. Its very existence proved that Sarajevo, despite the siege, refused to stop living. Decades later, Sarajevo again hosts the festival, a reminder of its unwavering spirit.
