US Senators Shaheen and Durbin Honor Genocide Victims in Srebrenica
United States Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin visited the Srebrenica Memorial Center today. Their visit reaffirmed the importance of remembering the July 1995 genocide. It also highlighted the need to protect the historical truth about the crimes committed there.
Director Emir Suljagić and his staff welcomed the two senators. Suljagić guided them through the museum. The senators learned about the genocide and heard the experiences of survivors. They also reviewed the center's work in research, documentation, and public education. The visit concluded at the memorial cemetery. There, the senators laid a wreath alongside mothers and women from Srebrenica and Bratunac.
Senator Shaheen has been a long-time supporter of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She worked to establish a US National Day of Remembrance for the victims of the genocide. Both Shaheen and Durbin previously spoke out against intimidation directed at the Memorial Center. They stated that institutions protecting historical truth must work without fear or pressure.
Memorial Center officials expressed gratitude for the visit. They noted that international support protects the dignity of victims and the rights of survivors. They also emphasized that opposing genocide denial remains a shared global responsibility.
