Young Bosniak Politicians Shift Toward the Secular Political Center
Over the past ten years, younger Bosniak politicians have changed their ideological positions. They moved away from strict national conservatism. Instead, they accepted secular and civic political ideas. In their early careers, some held radical or clerical views. Today, these politicians work within mainstream civic circles. They made practical compromises to build their careers and gain wider public support.
This shift occurred because attempts to divide the Bosniak public failed. Fringe groups promoted debates over historical revisionism and World War II divisions. However, a civic-secular movement offered an alternative. This movement promoted national unity. It recognized the Partisans and the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina as defenders of the same state. Both the main Bosniak party and the Islamic Community endorsed this unifying view.
Young conservatives accepted this reality and adopted the civic narrative. Meanwhile, leftist factions grew frustrated that they could not polarize the public. These factions began accusing civic-secularists of nationalism, finding support from foreign figures like a former American ambassador. Over the last four years, young conservatives used this civic patriotic narrative to gain influence. However, their future direction remains uncertain. A shift back toward right-wing politics could open new political divisions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
