Andrzej Wajda Film Festival Opens in Sarajevo

An Andrzej Wajda Film Festival will take place at Kino Meeting Point in Sarajevo. The festival runs from Wednesday, June 10, to Saturday, June 13.

Andrzej Wajda (1926–2016) was a very important director in Polish and global cinema. He was known for the Polish Film School and later for the “cinema of moral unrest.” Wajda studied painting before getting a degree in film directing. He gained international fame with films like "Kanal" and "Ashes and Diamonds." These films changed how World War II was shown. Wajda often explored Polish history and moral questions in his work. He received an honorary Oscar in 2000 for his lifetime achievements. Poland has declared 2026 as the "Year of Andrzej Wajda" to honor his 100th birth anniversary.

The festival will screen four of his acclaimed films. "Kanal" (1957) opens the festival on June 10. This war drama shows the tragedy of the Warsaw Uprising. On June 11, "The Promised Land" (1975) will be shown. This film looks at early capitalism and social issues in 19th-century Łódź. "Wałęsa. Man of Hope" (2013) screens on June 12. It tells the story of Lech Wałęsa, the Solidarność leader. The festival ends on June 13 with "The Scent of Reeds" (2009). This film reflects on love, loss, and memory.

Tickets for all screenings are free. They can be picked up one hour before each film at Kino Meeting Point.
